Amy’s Story
There was a point, not that long ago, when I was holding myself together with caffeine and sheer willpower. My body was shutting down, my mind was running on fumes, and I couldn’t tell the difference between surviving and living anymore. I had been sick for months with Epstein-Barr, and my doctor told me the words I never thought I’d hear: stop. Just… stop everything. Do only what keeps you alive and nothing more.
It felt like failure. I’d built my whole identity on doing, fixing, helping, performing—and suddenly I couldn’t even hold up the mask. Underneath, I found a mess of old trauma, overstimulation, and a nervous system that had been screaming for rest for years. The stillness was unbearable at first. It forced me to sit with everything I’d avoided feeling.
One night, while I was trying to let my teenage daughter give me a makeover, “Mary Kay” popped into my mind. I hadn’t thought about it in twenty years. Back then it was just a side hustle, something lighthearted. On impulse, I signed up again the next day. It didn’t make sense logically—but my spirit must have known something my brain didn’t.
What started as a small act of nostalgia turned into medicine. The simple rhythm of cleansing my skin, touching my own face with care, watching color bloom back into my cheeks—it grounded me.
