Ophelia is sulking.
Technically she’s curled into a dramatic croissant shape on my office rug, surrounded by a blanket fort made of failed scrolls and expired coupons for mushroom scones. But emotionally? Total spiral.
I nudge the edge of her wing. “You okay?”
“No,” she moans. “I mapped the journey. I built the funnel. I sent the words. And still—nothing. No subscribers. No sales. Not even a confusing barter offer involving pickled frogs and moonstone.”
I sit beside her, cross-legged on the rug. We’ve been here before. The late-night realization that her marketing didn’t exist? That was top of funnel. We fixed it. Built her a signal. Got her message out of the void and into inboxes.
But this?
This is different.
This is the eerie silence that happens after the email is opened. The story is read. The reader is nodding along, feeling seen—and then quietly disappears.

She sniffs. “Was my call-to-action not sparkly enough?”
I hand her a mug of tea. “You built a beautiful road,” I say gently. “But it leads to a dead end.”
Her eyes widen. “I made a dead-end customer journey?!”
I nod. “Yep. You nailed the vibe, built the world, got the attention—but you didn’t give them anywhere clear to go next.”
She lets out a low growl. “I spent three weeks writing that piece. I edited out four existential metaphors and two rants about bureaucratic toads.”
“And it was wonderful,” I say. “But it didn’t do anything.”
Because here’s the truth most creators don’t want to hear—writing isn’t enough. Even when it’s powerful. Even when people say they love it.
You don’t need more words.
You need a system.
That’s when I show her the sketch on my whiteboard: a simple 3-part structure I use in almost everything I write.
The Hook – Grabs attention and opens a loop.
The Value – Provides insight and resonance—but leaves room for curiosity.
The CTA – A clear, compelling next step that deepens the relationship.
“You need an article funnel,” I say.
She tilts her head. “Is that like a fun-sized sales spell?”
“Exactly. It’s how you turn readers into subscribers. Subscribers into buyers. Without pressure. Without manipulation. Just strategy and service and a little bit of soul.”
She stares at the board. Then at her tea. Then back at the board. “So I wasn’t broken. I just needed a middle-of-funnel fix.”
I smile. “Now you’re getting it.”
This is the part no one tells you.
Most of us don’t fail because we lack talent.
